Guidance notes for nominations

2012's calibre of nominees was of the highest standard once again, with so many worthy people nominated for their contribution to football. However there can only be nine winners. To meet some of this year’s finest contributors who really make young footballers shine please read on.

Player of the Year (boy) - Alex Samuel

Alex has been playing junior football from the age of six and has consistently achieved success at all age levels. Now at the age of 15 he has played for Wales U18 semi- professional team and for the Wales U18 schools team. He is currently a member of the Aberystwyth FC academy, has represented at CWFA level and for Ceredigion Schools and has also recently been signed up for a scholarship with Swansea City.

Player of the Year (girl) - Kelsey Davies

Kelsey has been a fantastic player throughout 2012, playing for both regional and national teams in the Celtic nations. She is a committed player and a great role model for other girls coming into the game. Her commitment and dedication is primarily rooted in her grassroots background at Kinmel Bay FC where she has been a loyal player for the club for many years.

Community Player of the Year (boy) - Ellis Underwood

Ellis, 11, lost his sight in his right eye at just nine years of age and was told then that he could no longer play mainstream football. Despite this set back at such an early age Ellis’ determination shone through as he joined a disability team so he could continue playing football. Ellis has not let his disability get in his way and has been able to make new friends whilst continuing to play the game that he loves.

Community Player of the Year (girl) - Celyn Barnett

Celyn started playing for Cwmamman United under-9s at the start of this season as the only girl in the squad, yet despite this has slotted into the squad with absolute ease. Her attitude to the game and her playing style has meant she has been accepted immediately into the squad and at such a young age is already an inspiration to other young girls coming into the game.

School of the Year - Eglwys Newydd Primary School

The teaching staff lead by Mark Radout are fully committed to developing grassroots football within Eglwys Newydd Primary School helping to provide numerous football festivals and fixtures throughout the season for young players at the school and in the local community. The school is fully involved with the WFT and the Cardiff Schools Football League, and have been instrumental in arranging extra-curricular football sessions and events.

Club of the Year - Brickfield Rangers

Brickfield Rangers have this year become one of only two junior clubs in Wales to achieve the Gold Accreditation on the Club Accreditation Initiative. This is due to their wide range of programs and fantastic development opportunities they offer to all members of the community and area. Working with more than 100 coaches and organising over 400 players within the club each week, Brickfield Rangers is a well-run and fantastic example of what a grassroots club can achieve.

Coach of the Year - Wayne Jeremiah

Wayne's main achievement as coach, manager and organiser of Mardy Tigers/PILCS LFC has been to showcase girls and womens football in the local area and across Wales. The club established a senior side who have recently just won their division at their first attempt, putting Torfaen at the heart of Welsh girls’ football. So many girls have taken part in football through this club thanks to Wayne’s commitment with the junior section currently at over 100 girls and the senior team now comprising of a 20 strong squad.

The People's Award - Mary Ball

Mary Ball has been involved in women’s and girl’s football for several years and gives up countless hours of her own time to help out at Trefelin Ladies, where she is currently the Club Secretary. She organises fixtures, liaises with the players, cooks the match food, washes the kit and acts as first aider when needed. Her dedication is second to none and the club just simply wouldn’t run without her.

Lifetime Achievement Award - Alun Mummery

Alun at 70 years old is the secretary of Llanfairpwll FC and is still involved in various levels of football. He first became secretary of the club in 1959 whilst a player, until they later disbanded in 1963. Alun worked at Bangor City before becoming secretary of his home club again in the 1980-81 season having helped them reform in the early 1970s. To this day and more than 50 years on Alun recalls missing only six games home or away and is well respected wherever he goes.
